A FORMER teacher is preparing to take part in an exhibition at Barnsley Civic.

Ann Jones taught English at Darton College before leaving teaching to launch her board games events business – Cards or Die.

Now in her eighth year of business Ann has been invited to exhibit her board games at the theatre.

As part of Artangel’s ‘Come as you really are’ exhibition, Barnsley Civic are collaborating with Cards or Die, to display over 150 vintage games. The exhibition opens on May 24 and runs until August 8.

It is part of a UK-wide project led by Hetain Patel and Artangel working with 13 partner organisations including Barnsley Civic.

Ann has submitted her vintage games, collected over years of charity shop visits, ebay searches and donations.

She said: “These are the games that connect most strongly with people and yet are the least played of my games. The exhibition aims to celebrate people’s commitment to their hobby in a society dominated by consumerism. Consumerism is particularly virulent in the board games community as there is a pressure to have the hottest, newest game.

“By exhibiting the vintage collection, I hope to remind people of the history of the hobby and our own nostalgic connection to it.’

The exhibition promises to showcase a wide variety of hobbies, presenting an alternative portrait of the UK.
