ALMOST 40 people attended the Barnsley annual Workers’ Memorial Day event outside the town hall last week.
People from a range of trade unions and a number of councillors were at the event on Monday afternoon.
Mayor of Barnsley John Clarke opened the event with a moving speech of how sad it is to mark every year the numbers of workers who set off to work and failed to return home because of a fatality at work.
Speakers from a number of unions gave reports of how workplaces they are responsible for have suffered losses.
George Arthur, Barnsley Trades Union Council’s secretary, said: “Our trades council is proud that we have held a WMD event every year since it was founded in 1992 even during Covid.
“Every year we use the April 28 as a day to ‘Remember the Dead: Fight for the Living’."
