A NEW memorial commemorating 13 people who died in the Higham Colliery explosion in 1860 could be created.

Men and boys were killed in the explosion which took place on February 15.

Plans have now been submitted by Chris Skidmore, the Yorkshire chairman of the NUM, for a memorial to be built west of Lawrence Close.

The memorial will depict a coal tub.

A report states: “The proposal is to place a miners’ tub fixed on rails, settled on a stand of sleepers – on a grass verge – ten metres from the existing carriageway.

“This will act as a memorial for the mining disaster at the colliery in Higham, adding historical value to the location and enhancing local knowledge as well as acting as a focal point for the community of which many were directly, or had relatives, involved with the disaster.”

Public consultation ends on May 14.
