A PERSONAL trainer is set to take on her first marathon and will be supporting a local charity while she does it.

Lizzie Shingleton is preparing for the Leeds Rob Burrow Marathon on May 11 and is raising money for Barnsley Hospital Charity, a cause close to her heart.

A charity spokesperson said: “We are right behind our wonderful supporter Lizzie, a personal trainer, as she is set to take on her first marathon.

“As a personal trainer working with many postnatal women, she hopes her marathon journey will inspire other mums to believe in their strength and ability to achieve their fitness goals after having children.”

Lizzie said: "With a background in rowing and experience in 10K and half marathon races, I have recently reignited my love for running. After completing the Barnsley 10K last year, I decided to set my sights on a full marathon before my 40th birthday.

“I love encouraging my clients to take part in races and fitness events, and I think it’s important for them to see me challenging myself just as much as I push them.

“Even though I’m running the marathon on my own, a few of us will be taking on the Barnsley 10K again this June. Training has been tough, but I’m steadily building up the distances and now hitting over 20K!”

The charity spokesperson added: “Lizzie has chosen to run in support of our charity as a way of giving back to the hospital that played a vital role in her family’s care. Both of her daughters, now aged seven and four, were born at Barnsley Hospital, and during a difficult pregnancy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was overwhelmed by the kindness and expertise of the hospital’s staff.”

Lizzie added: “From women’s services to A&E, everyone we’ve encountered at Barnsley Hospital has been amazing. I’ll never forget the care and attention they gave to me and my family. Running this marathon is my way of saying thank you and supporting the incredible teams that helped bring my daughters into the world.”
